What Does It Mean to Know Something?
There is a difference between knowing a fact and understanding it. Where does one become the other?
You can memorise that water is two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen without ever feeling you understand water. Knowing names is not the same as knowing things. So what are we reaching for when we say we truly know something?
From information to understanding
Understanding is what happens when knowledge connects — when a fact finds its neighbours and you can use it, explain it, see where it bends. Information is a brick; understanding is the house. This is why the best reading is slow: you are not collecting bricks, you are building.
To know something well is, in the end, to be changed a little by it.
