A question · The Inner Journey

Who Am I Beyond My Thoughts?

If you are not your passing thoughts and feelings, then who is left? An old question, asked gently.

Your thoughts change by the minute. Your moods come and go. The body you had as a child is almost entirely replaced. And yet something has felt continuously like you through all of it. What is that something?

Peeling the question

Try answering with everything you are not. I am not only my name. I am not only my job, my worries, my opinions. Each time you set one down, notice that you are still here to set it down. The question is not meant to be solved so much as to be lived with — it has a way of making life feel larger.

You are not the waves. You are the sea they happen in.
